West Bay → Coxen Hole
The short version

If you plan on staying on West Bay Beach to relax, swim, snorkel and dive, you definitely don't need a car. But if you're the type that likes to explore, there's plenty to see around the rest of the island.

Taxis and private drivers can take you all around — though with a big group that adds up. You can rent a car from the airport, from West Bay Mall down the road, or from the rental desk right inside the entrance to Infinity Bay. The resort also offers transportation to and from for $15 roundtrip per person.

West Bay · West End
An island truth

There are more restaurants than you'll ever need within walking distance. We also recommend a water taxi to West End to check out all the restaurants there. You really can't go wrong — and food & drinks here are cheaper than most other islands we've traveled to.

House favorite
Bananarama
01 · Right next door · West Bay

Bananarama.

Right next door, on the beach, super casual and very reasonably priced. They post 2-for-1 food & drink specials every day on a whiteboard out front. Delicious pizza for picky family members; live music, karaoke and trivia at night.

Show up in swimsuits, let the kids play in the sand while your food cooks. The vibe is unbeatable.

Order a Bananarama (virgin works too)
our kids beg to go back to Roatan just for these drinks
Monday lobster
Beachers
02 · Short walk toward West End

Beachers.

A close second on West Bay. Coconut shrimp is delicious, and the Monday-night lobster special gets you a couple of lobster tails with sides for about $20. Get there early on Mondays — they fill up fast.

Where we got married
Kismet
03 · Lighthouse Point · 15-min uphill walk

Kismet.

At the Meridian at Lighthouse Point — a condo development up the hill past Infinity Bay with a restaurant at the westernmost point of the island. Open for lunch and dinner. The walk is hot; drive or taxi if you'd rather.

Very secluded, especially nice on cruise-ship days when West Bay gets crowded. Walk along the iron-shore trail for gorgeous views and photo ops.

we actually got married here. it's that pretty.
Brunch goals
Luna Muna at Ibagari
04 · Ibigari Boutique Resort · West Bay

Luna Muna.

Still in West Bay but off the main beach — a cute boutique resort with an amazing restaurant. It's pricey, but worth it. Especially good for brunch. The setting is gorgeous and the food is delicious.

Hidden gem
The Drunken Sailor
05 · West End

The Drunken Sailor.

Looks like one of West End's many little dive bars, but it's actually an authentic Italian restaurant owned by an Italian expat and his family. Super reasonably priced for what it is. The owner is often in the back cooking and will come out to explain the menu.

tiny place — reserve, or arrive at an off time
Sunset on the sand
Argentinian Grill · sunset on West Bay beach
06 · Down the beach · West Bay

Argentinian Grill.

A short stroll down the beach in West Bay, with tables right on the sand and one of the prettiest sunset views around. Known for its steaks and seafood — get the whole grilled fish, you won't regret it. Time it for golden hour and order another round while the sky does its thing.

go for sunset — the beachfront tables fill up fast
Best cinnamon bun
Sandy Buns Bakery & Café · West End
07 · West End · bakery & café

Sandy Buns.

A cheerful little pink-and-yellow bakery and café in West End, and home to the best cinnamon bun you'll ever have in your life. Trust us. Swing by in the morning for fresh-baked treats and good coffee before the day gets going.

come early — the cinnamon buns sell out
Special night out
Alera · garden dining on West Bay Beach
08 · West Bay Beach

Alera.

When you're after an upscale night out, this is the one — a romantic garden room strung with lights beneath a leafy canopy, right on West Bay Beach. The kitchen leans into Caribbean roots with a refined, elevated touch. Worth dressing up for.

save it for a special evening — reserve ahead

And ten more we love.

Right across from Ocean One Complex, just outside West Bay Lodge. Run by a couple of expats; the food is delicious. Small — reserve for dinner if you're not going off-peak.

At the very end of West Bay toward West End — cross the boardwalk. Reasonably priced breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try the lobster burrito and fish empanadas. Heads up: it gets buggy in the early evening.

Ginger's

In Half Moon Bay, West End. Some of the best fresh fish on the island, and another perfect spot to let the kids splash in calm, shallow water while you wait for the food.

Sundowners

A West End icon — two-story bar right on the water with frequent live music. Where the divers and expats hang out at sunset. The views from here are insane.

Lily Pond Garden

A true hidden gem in West End run by Zack and his partner. Reservation-only B&B + restaurant. The fish melts in your mouth. More of an adult, upscale ambiance — but Zack was lovely with our two little ones.

Arlyn's Place

Tiny hole-in-the-wall in the shopping complex down Bananarama road (take a left out of Ocean One, then first left toward the beach). Local-style, and the best breakfast deal around — fresh baleadas (homemade tortillas with beans, cheese, egg, and a dozen fillings) for a couple of dollars. Practice your Spanish — they don't speak English.

Money & everyday answers.
FAQ · Currency · Tipping
Tax · Cards
Currency · Conversion

The US Dollar works everywhere.

No need to stress about exchanging money before you arrive. Occasionally prices are listed in Honduran Lempiras, but vendors still take USD. Heads-up: if your dollar bill has even a small tear, it may be rejected — bring crisp bills if you can.

The rate, roughly
26L ≈ $1 USD

So something priced at 100L is about $4. Or just open the iPhone Calculator → tap the icon → toggle Convert.

Credit cards

Bring Visa or Mastercard.

Accepted most places, but not all. Amex is hit-or-miss — bring a backup. Vendors rarely charge a card fee, and paying in Lempiras usually gives you a better rate than the vendor would offer. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees, even paying in USD — fees can sneak in.

Tipping tip

Tell the server before they swipe.

Paying by card at restaurants, you usually need to tell your server the tip amount before they run the card — there's often no line to write it in. Forget? Cash tips are always welcome. A good rule of thumb: ~15%.

Small bills

Your best friend in Roatan.

We always bring a stash of $1s and $5s — a few hundred dollars' worth — and it makes life so much easier. Local vendors and service staff really appreciate small bills for tips, snacks, taxis, and quick purchases.

Sales tax surprise

15% – 19%, depending.

Sales tax in Roatan is steep. If a price doesn't include tax it can be a surprise at checkout — most vendors will tell you whether tax is baked in, but when in doubt, just ask.

+
Groceries & conveniences.
Eldon's · Fresco · Octopus
Pro tip

Bring all toiletries and staples you need from home — but in a pinch, the island has everything. We recommend stocking up at Eldon's, the big grocery store, on your way from the airport to the condo.

★ Best stop

Eldon's

The big supermarket in Coxen Hole, right by the airport. Cheapest and best stocked. Most private drivers will stop here on the way from the airport to West Bay for a few extra dollars.

Produce

Fresco

Fresh fruit and vegetable market across the street from the entrance to Ocean One, just down from Infinity Bay. Perfect for breakfast staples — and avocados for guacamole on the porch.

In a pinch

Octopus

Small (and very expensive) convenience store in West Bay Mall — the outdoor complex of shops just to the left as you exit Infinity Bay.

On the beach

Beacher's Mini-Mart

Small grocery right next to Beacher's restaurant on West Bay Beach. Staples and alcohol. Not cheap, but very convenient if you don't feel like moving.

Get help

Ask your driver

Don't have a car? Most private drivers or taxis will stop at the grocery store on the way from the airport for only a few extra dollars — if you ask ahead of time.

Sundries

What to pack

Reef-safe sunscreen, your own snorkel gear if you have it, a soft cooler bag, bug spray (especially for evenings), and a stash of crisp $1s and $5s.

★ The main event

Some of the best snorkeling in the world — just down the beach.

Walk out to the beach, turn left, and head all the way to the end where the rocks are. Enter the water and swim straight out to the reef, then go right. There's a huge reef that surrounds the island, and a big shelf with a drop-off. You can snorkel here for hours.

For little kids

Swimming with the fishies.

In the same area by the rocks, you can stand in shallow water and be surrounded by colorful fish. For families with little ones, this is always the highlight — now anywhere we travel, our kids are disappointed when they're not surrounded by fish in shallow water.

Can't-miss

Scuba diving.

If you dive, you can't come to Roatan without diving. Extremely affordable; the reef is close so boat rides are short. Night dives, shipwrecks, drift dives — you name it. Favorite shop: West Bay Divers. Good reviews on Naboo & Infinity Divers too.

Day trip · weather permitting

Cayos Cochinos.

Tiny remote islands about two hours away with some of the most pristine, untouched snorkeling we have ever seen. Most tours include a fresh fish lunch cooked for you by the locals. Not cheap — definitely worth it.

★ Highly recommendedFull day · weather-dependent
Boats · booze · snorkel

Mono Loco.

Snorkel tours, sunset tours, dinner cruises. The food and drinks are fantastic and the trips are super fun — filled with music, dancing, and partying. Kids loved it too.

Mayan Jungle Canopy.

Ziplining; both of our kids (2 and 5 at the time) were able to double-zip with us. Go early — it gets hot, and you walk up a lot of steps to the platforms. They also have animal encounters (monkeys, sloths, feeding birds) and offer roundtrip transport.

🦜

Gumbalimba Park.

Right at the entrance to West Bay. Hold macaws, have monkeys jump on your head, see iguanas. A true sanctuary — the monkeys and macaws aren't caged. You sometimes see their macaws flying over West Bay.

Mangroves + sharks.

Boat ride through the mangroves, then snorkeling — some include a swim with sharks. We haven't done this ourselves, but guests have called it the highlight of their trip. Recommended operator: Tyler Hynds, Eastroatan Tours.

Private island day trip

Brady's Cay.

About a 40-min drive past French Harbour. Park, take their pontoon shuttle to the island, and spend the day on the beach with a restaurant on-site. Go on a non-cruise-ship day — Google cruise schedules — and you'll have it nearly to yourself.
